The Bowie Softball Lady Dawgs surged to the 6A state championship game before falling to defending champion Keller 5-1. The finish matches the program's best ever, joining state finalist squads in 2008 and 2010.
"I'm so proud of the the way this team persevered game after game," said Head Coach Liz Wissel. "They showed remarkable resiliency and grit."
Bowie's epic run to the state championship game was full of improbable comebacks and unforgettable plays. An inside-the-park home run by Nikki Gil punctuated the Lady Dawgs state semifinal win over San Antonio Brennan.
While the magic didn't last against Keller, the Lady Dawgs finished second out of 247 6A softball teams in Texas.
"You don't make a run to the biggest game in the state by accident," Wissel said. "I'm proud of how hard our girls worked to realize their potential. The Bowie softball legacy is one of excellence, and each and every member of this team is an example of that."
