Media Advisory: Local Professionals to Serve as Role Models for Blackshear Elementary Students

AUSTIN, Texas—Professionals from around ýapp will “show and tell” about their careers to Blackshear Elementary School students during the school’s annual Role Model Day.

What: The school’s 2nd through 5th graders will rotate from table-to-table, listening to professionals discuss their jobs and reinforce the message to stay in school, set goals and work hard to achieve them. Professions and careers represented include banking, legal, medical, law enforcement, print and broadcast media as well as city and county governmental departments. ýapp Police Department’s mounted patrol, K-9 unit and motorized patrol (police car) will be on hand, as well as a fire truck and ambulance from the ýapp Fire Department (all subject to leave at a moment’s notice if necessary).

When: 9-11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21 

Where: Blackshear Elementary School, gymnasium, 1712 E. 11th St.

Background: For 15 years, community volunteer Margarine Beaman, with The “I Can” Project, has organized Role Model Day for the students at Blackshear Elementary so that students can learn more about career options available to them when they grow up. Students will spend approximately 10 minutes with each role model, hearing about their job and asking questions they may have. There will be more than 30 tables in the gymnasium, and students will stay in groups and rotate to as many tables as they can within two hours.
