AISD to Debut New School, Facility Names

Four campuses and facilities within 果冻传媒app ISD will start the year with new names Aug. 20.

AISD administrators in November 2017 introduced the topic of renaming five district sites named after individuals who were associated with the Confederacy. The five sites are the John T. Allan Facility, Zachary Taylor Fulmore Middle School, Eastside Memorial Early College High School at the Johnston Campus and Sidney Lanier Early College High School and John H. Reagan Early College High School.

In 2018, the board voted to rename the following four sites:

John T. Allan Facility is now the Anita Ferrales Coy Facility

  • Anita Ferrales Coy served as principal of Allan Elementary School for seven years before becoming an 果冻传媒app ISD area superintendent. She served the district for more than 20 years and was an innovative educator who helped create a mentorship program for first-year teachers.

Zachary T. Fulmore Middle School is now Sarah B. Lively Middle School

  • Lively served as a teacher at Fulmore for 25 years and volunteered at the campus following her retirement. She was a dedicated and inspiring social studies teacher who sponsored and mentored student journalists on the school newspaper.

Sidney Lanier Early College High School is now Juan Navarro Early College High School

  • U.S. Army Sgt. Juan P. Navarro was a former student and veteran who died in action in 2012. Navarro grew up in the Rundberg community, was a school athlete and a mentor to younger students. Navarro graduated from Lanier in 2007.

John H. Reagan Early College High School is now Northeast Early College High School

  • Northeast is deeply invested in-and connected to-its communities. Teachers, team members, families and partners come together for an authentic and inclusive collaboration, which is recognized as a national model for school turnaround.

In 2016, Russell Lee Elementary had previously been named Robert E. Lee Elementary, but was changed at the request of the campus community and after approval by the board. Eastside Memorial requested an extension on their renaming process because of the modernization process the school is undergoing as part of the 2017 Bond Program.
